Errors when opening a drawing

'Invalid character'

A common error encountered by users when opening a PDF is the 'invalid character' error.

QuickScale will display the following dialog:

Invalid character error dialog

This is generally related to an error with the meta-data contained in most PDF files.

If you have access to the Adobe Acrobat application (not the free Acrobat Reader application) then the issue can be resolved by opening the PDF in Acrobat and immediately saving the PDF as an 'Optimized PDF':

Save As in Acrobat

The alternative is to contact Anyscale and we'll try to 'clean' the drawing for you.

'Out of Memory'

Another error encountered by users when opening a PDF is the 'Out of Memory' error. Sometimes, QuickScale can take a long time to read and display a PDF drawing. Eventually, the Error Report dialog will be displayed. If you click the 'click here' link on the dialog and look at the report, you will see, near the top between <Message> and </Message>, the words 'OutOfMemoryException':

Out of Memory error

As with the 'Invalid character' error above, if you have access to Adobe Acrobat then the issue can be resolved by opening the PDF in Acrobat and immediately saving the PDF as an 'Optimized PDF'. Alternatively, contact Anyscale for assistance.

'Blank' drawing

Sometimes, QuickScale will open a drawing without error, but will display and 'empty' PDF:

Empty PDF

Once again, if you have access to Adobe Acrobat then the issue can normally be resolved by opening the PDF in Acrobat and immediately saving the PDF as an 'Optimized PDF'. Alternatively, contact Anyscale for assistance.
